Sandrine Elberg livre des images ambivalentes issues de territoires hostiles et improbables liées à notre imaginaire collectif. Parée d’un masque de jeune fille Shakumi du théâtre Nô, elle incarne le personnage Yuki-Onna et nous invite à la rêverie et la contemplation. Yuki-Onna est un personnage de folklore japonais, c’est la femme des neiges. C’est un Yokaï, un esprit ou un fantôme qui apparaît la nuit dans les régions où il neige abondamment. Elle est décrite de différentes manières, tantôt comme une femme immense mais elle peut aussi incarner un paysage enneigé. Elle est la personnification de l’hiver et en particulier des tempêtes de neige. Yuki-Onna représente la dualité de l’hiver, de sa beauté lisse et froide née également la violence et la cruauté des tempêtes. 

Sandrine Elberg’s photographic work mixes identity quest and formal exploration. The artist delivers ambivalent images from hostile territories, connected to our collective imagination. Dressed with a mask from young girl Shakumi from the Noh Theater, she represents the character of Yuki-Onna and invites us to reverie and contemplation.

Yuki-Onna is a Japanese folkloric character, a Yôkai, a spirit or a ghost who appears at night in regions where it snows a lot. She is described in different manners, sometimes as a huge woman sometimes as a snow-covered landscape. She represents the duality of winter, in between smooth beauty and violent storms. A part of Sandrine Elberg’s work consists in interfering with the negative. The altered image becomes then a transcendent image.
